So often we read the various food magazines or look at fad diets and think to ourselves, we can't possibly lose weight in this fashion. Realistically, not too many people do. A diet which restricts your carbs so completely can and does cause bodily harm and in some cases actually starves your body.

Diets which offer foods so low in fat and sugar that they offer no real taste are not going to help you to lose weight either. This is particularly true during the holidays. The upcoming holidays are going to offer you foods that are rich and delicious and you want to take part in that. Ideally you will be able to do so with some discretion.

There is simply no way to diet over the holidays and at the risk of flaming from the fad diet groups and the health food gurus, we're going to repeat that emphatically. You will be out among many people who are eating foods that are not necessarily low in calories.

By unlearning bad habits such as binging, we can safely eat from all of the food groups in moderation and enjoy foods that are a little higher in fat, balancing them with foods that are a little lower in fat. It isn't necessary for you to eat a 5 inch piece of cake. Select a smaller portion and balance that with some fresh fruit and dip perhaps, but don't try to pass up the cake all together. If you do so, you'll end up feeling resentful and your campaign to keep the weight off over Christmas will be a wash before it begins.

It is patently unrealistic to assume that because someone told you to, that you can pass up a chocolate cake and instead, as one diet suggests "nibble on carrots while others are eating cakes and pie for holiday dinners." Not only is this an unrealistic expectation, but it is ridiculous to promote it.

The holidays are a time when people get together and eat, drink and be merry as the saying goes. You don't have to gain weight over the holidays. Learn and use some moderation. You can get through the upcoming holidays without gaining much weight and still enjoy the food and drink that others are enjoying.
