The reality television craze is over a decade old at this point and for some people it's the best thing to ever happen to the entertainment world. Of course for other people, reality TV is a dirty word that should be barred. So, as a society as a whole will we ever get enough of reality TV or are we bound to see it for the indefinite future?
One thing to note is that reality television has certainly evolved. The first wave of shows often featured competitions, but for the most part they followed people around for a long time and captured all of their living and social situations. Shows like this include Survivor, Big Brother and Real World.
Then there came reality TV shows for just about every profession or hobby on the planet. Reality TV for athletes, chefs, businesspeople, home repairmen, fishermen, bail bondsmen and on down the line. If you had a job that could be filled, it was likely there was some kind of reality show about it!
Now, with seemingly everything else already exhausted, the big thing is physical talent shows and celebrity TV shows. Think about Dancing With the Stars, So You Think you Can Dance, America's Got Talent, Celebrity Apprentice and more.
But with all of these shows, will we ever get our fill? If you don't like reality TV, the good news is that this evolving landscape hopefully means that TV is running out of ideas. If you do like reality TV, you can just as easily say that all of these new kinds of shows just continue to demonstrate how many ideas there are, and how much fun they can be.
It looks like we all will just have to watch and see what happens. The good news is that with hundreds of TV channels, whether you like or hate reality TV you can still find something, somewhere, that you can find palatable to watch.
