Does baby proofing work? I have been recently blessed with a new addition to the family. Our first son, Michael, and as most newborns Michael learns very quickly. Our house has many pitfalls awaiting a newborn and we have taken many precautions in securing the areas which Michael might be able to get into.
Our first visit and only visit (which limited our options somewhat) was to Babies'R'Us. We did a lot of research online before making our visit so we had an idea of what we needed. The first thing we purchased were wall plugs. These plastic fittings prevent your child from putting his/her fingers or any other objects in electrical outlets; these include wall outlets and power bars. If you use power bars, however, you will be glad to learn that these can come equipped with shutters. They have integrated locks to prevent you or a child from plugging anything in.
We managed to skip purchasing a gate as we found that, through the many reviews online, these were easily bypassed and weren't secure enough. We agreed that in this case we would have to keep an eye out for our little one when he was near the stairs.
Finally, there are drawer hitches, cabinet locks, etc. These range from $6.99 CDN and up. If you do not have previous experience with these items then buying the wrong ones can prove costly and ineffective. If you know of parents of who have gone through this already then I would suggest that you ask them before making these purchases. I found, from my experience, these locks and latches do not work very well.
I hope this brief article has helped you a little when it comes to baby proofing your home! Of course, there is much more to do and as such the internet is a excellent starting point.
